Challenging High Atlas Hikes Above Todra Gorge

Challenging High Atlas Hikes Above Todra Gorge

The real hiking in Todra Gorge starts when you climb high above the limestone cliffs on these strenuous routes. Do not expect paved paths or clear trail markers up here. You will encounter thin air, cold winds, and trails used mostly by local shepherds that often vanish entirely into the scree and rocks.

I have guided visitors through these specific peaks for over seven years, and I hiked them long before that. When the trail disappears on the massive, open plateau, you will need reliable navigation. Studying international business in Germany taught me about efficient logistics, so I make sure my Ultimate Todra Gorge Offline Trail Bundle (14 GPX Routes) linked at the top of the page works perfectly without cell signal. It is crucial for these routes, as following your downloaded GPX tracks is often the only way to stay on the path.

Here are the best high-altitude treks in the region. You will need plenty of water, strong sun protection, and a windbreaker.

The Warm-Up/Cool-Down Connector

10. The Spring of the Holy Fish – Tinghir Palm Grove Loop

Before you tackle the big climbs, consider this your warm-up walk. It is also a perfect cool-down route for your rest days. This is a very flat, short loop that keeps you near the water and the deep shade of the palms. Use this for recovery if your legs are sore from climbing or the high-altitude treks I detail below.

The Challenging High Atlas Panoramas

11. View of the Valley – View of the Atlas Mountains Loop

This is the classic high-altitude trek from the upper gorge area. You will climb steadily until the tight canyon walls fall away, revealing a massive, open plateau. The 360-degree views of the High Atlas from the 1862m summit are, in my opinion, the best in the entire region. You might pass nomad camps up here, so please keep a respectful distance from their dogs and tents.

12. View of the Valley and Village – Entrance to the Todra Gorge

This is a steep, demanding loop that rewards you with an incredible vantage point over where the gorge meets the wide valley. The 542m climb is serious work. You must take it slow and start early in the morning before the intense sun hits the exposed limestone walls.

13. View of the Valley and Village – Todra Gorge Loop

This route offers a slightly different approach to the high viewpoints. It gives you a wider angle of the local Berber villages below before looping back toward the main gorge. The descent on this trail can be tough on the knees because of the loose scree and rocks. I highly recommend using hiking poles for this specific route.

14. Todra Gorge – Entrance to the Todra Gorge Loop

This is the most physically demanding route in the entire bundle. It features a massive, continuous climb right from Toudgha El Oulia. You should not attempt this route in the middle of the day during the summer, as it is highly dangerous. The 642m ascent requires excellent fitness, but looking down at the tiny cars entering the gorge from the summit makes the effort entirely worth it.

If you are traveling locally, ensure you respect all private lands when starting from the villages.
