If you want to leave the flat palm groves and gain some actual elevation, you need the moderate trails connecting Todra Gorge to Tinghir. These routes require more effort, proper hiking shoes, and a solid sense of direction. The loose limestone here gets very slippery, and trail markers are almost nonexistent.
I have guided groups up these specific rocky paths for over seven years. One thing my business studies in Germany drilled into me is the importance of risk management, and getting lost in the sun on a loose limestone cliff is a major risk. You will lose cell service fast out here. To stay safe and keep on track, you should download my Ultimate Todra Gorge Offline Trail Bundle (14 GPX Routes) linked at the top of the page. It covers every single hike below so you never hit a dead-end at a private garden wall or wander off a cliff edge.
These trails are perfect for hikers with average fitness who want a closer look at the canyon geology and local village life.
1. Ruin to Red Wall Loop
This is a fantastic mid-level hike starting from Toudgha El Oulia. It takes you right up to the iconic “Red Wall” rock formations. You get a great mix of valley views and close-ups of the sheer canyon geology. The maximum elevation reaches 1424 meters with a 194-meter ascent. The path up to the ruins is uneven. The climb is steady but very exposed to the harsh sun. You absolutely must start this route in the early morning before the heat sets in.
2. Todra Gorge to Tinghir Loop
If you want to walk from the main gorge area all the way down toward Tinghir, this is your route. It is a solid half-day hike that gives you a true sense of the massive scale of the valley. You are walking the transition zone where the tight canyon finally opens up into the wide Tinghir oasis. The ascent is 140 meters. Pack a lunch and bring plenty of water. There are no corner stores on this stretch of the rock.
3. Tinghir Palm Grove to Tinghir Loop
This path offers a deeper exploration of the agricultural heart of the region. It weaves through the thickest parts of the palm grove before looping back toward the edges of town. The ascent is a manageable 91 meters. You will pass several local farms along the way. Be highly respectful of the property boundaries here. The trail markers are virtually nonexistent. This is exactly where the offline GPX file becomes essential to avoid dead-ends at private garden walls.
4. The Spring of the Holy Fish to Tinghir Loop
This route acts as a bridge between the natural spring in the gorge and the town limits of Tinghir. It gives you a great cross-section of both nature and local daily life. The total ascent is only 61 meters, making it a relatively easy moderate hike. The elevation gain is spread out nicely over the distance. It feels much less strenuous than the steep Red Wall loop.
5. Palm Grove to Holy Fish Extended Loop
This is another variation connecting Toudgha El Oulia to the Holy Fish spring. Instead of the flat bottom, it takes a slightly higher, undulating path right along the edge of the grove. The ascent is a minor 33 meters. It is the best route if you want to stay mostly in the shade but still want a longer walking distance than the quick 20-minute strolls down below.
